Hidden costs to ask any removalist about
The hourly rate is only half the story. Before you book anyone, ask about these, and get the answers in writing:
- When the clock starts. From the depot, or from your door? Ours: The clock starts when we arrive at your pickup address and stops when the last item is in place at your new home.
- Call-out or travel fees. Ours: 0.5 hours.
- Fuel levies, stair fees and long-carry fees. Some companies add them at the end.
- Weekend and public holiday rates. Ours: 0% on weekends and 0% on public holidays.
- Materials. Boxes, tape and mattress bags can add up. Boxes, tape and packing paper are charged at cost, only if you use ours.
- Heavy items. Pianos, pool tables and safes are usually priced separately; ask for the number before the day.
- Deposits and cancellations. How much, and when is it refunded?
How to keep the cost down
- Pack and label every box before the crew arrives, and take beds apart.
- Book the lift, and keep a parking spot free close to the door.
- Move on a weekday and avoid the last days of the month if your dates are flexible.
- Sell or give away what you don't want to move. Less on the truck means less time.
